Chapter 3

A week passed —a week during which Ryan and Gary saw each other three more times. Each date was more fun than the previous one, each date brought them closer together, and each date ended with totally hot sex. Yet Ryan couldn’t completely relax into the relationship. At no point had Gary said that he and Jock had stopped seeing each other, and Ryan found himself worrying, even obsessing, over where Gary was the nights he didn’t see Ryan. Is he with Jock?

There had been no communication between Jock and the Adonis Dating Service, either. Not that there normally would have been. Few were the guys who called or emailed to say, “I’m in love. Thank you,” in whatever words. Most of the time, if there was some communication, it was in the form of a question or complaint.

Ryan was totally in the dark about what was going on. Finally, he implore d Todd to step in and help him out. “You go out with Jock. You’re single. It’s valid. Maybe he’ll fall for you.”

“These machinations of yours get more and more complex and more and more devious.” Todd shook his head. He was unwilling to get caught up in Ryan’s schemes.

“You’re single. You’re eligible. He’s good-looking. He sounds interesting. Maybe you’ll like him. Why not?” Ryan’s voice rose with desperation. Todd held firm. “C’mon. Be a buddy. Do it for old time’s sake. One date. If you don’t like him, forget it.”

Finally Todd acceded. He suggested Ryan be the one to arrange the matchup, but Ryan was petrified that Jock would somehow say something to Gary about Ryan engineering the match.

“Now you’re being paranoid! That’s ludicrous!”

But Ryan would not give in, and finally Todd consented to send Jock his own file with a note to the effect that he was co-owner of the Adonis Dating Service, perhaps Jock remembered him from when he’d signed up, and that Todd had been going through the files and was struck by something about Jock’s file, and he was wondering if Jock would consider a date with him.

The plot worked, at least as far as Jock’s agreeing to go out with Todd, although Todd was beginning to wish he’d never gotten involved with Ryan’s scheming. “You owe me one, big time!”

“Okay, okay. Just go out and charm him. Take his mind off Gary. If he’s a dud, I’ll never ask you to see him again.”

But he wasn’t a dud. “I see what your friend Gary sees in Jock,” Todd remarked the next morning.

That wasn’t what Ryan really wanted to hear.

“We had a wonderful evening. We had drinks at Questions and then went to dinner at Rosie’s Roost. Great hot wings. I was willing to spring for something a little more expensive, but Jock picked Rosie’s. We played miniature golf under the lights after that and then went back to my house for a couple more drinks and to watch a video. He’s a fascinating character. I really like him. Thank you!”

“Are you planning to see him again?” Ryan asked.
